The applause makes him bounce about like a ball.
The hearts of the capital are inclining in his favor; he
determines to take them by storm. He challenges the
bull impetuously, “and as the bull makes for him, he
plants his sword far in between the shoulder blades,
terminating the thrust with a pirouette. The specta-
tors this time applaud before his magnificent ma-
neuver has been concluded; the applause has already
burst when the young man is seen quivering in the air,
impaled on one of the bull’s horns, which has entered
far into his left lung. But the sense of life has been
raised to such a pitch in his body at this moment, and
he is so completely dominated by the desire to suc-
ceed, that he extricates himself from the bull’s horn,
hops down on to the arena and executes a few ballet
steps with a smile and a gesture of apology to the pub-
lic. Then he falls down on his left arm and great
roses of blood spread their petals in the sand under
him. They contrast curiously with the snow white
forehead of the young man. He is borne out amid
deathly silence; the capital has really not seen enough
of him to be able to judge him fairly.
