ingly in unison on guitar, mandolin and lute. And one
of the railway-stokers had an inexhaustible supply of
coplas to recite, which he was able to make more lively
by including references to those present. At last he
roused the most, extraordinary enthusiasm of the
others by improvising a song about the two fair-haired
foreigners, who came from the distant north way down
to Guadix—way down to beautiful Guadix! His
listeners threw their hats at his head as a sign of ap-
plause and pounced upon him in boisterous delight.
We, the foreigners, expressed our pleasure by ordering
wine all around. The stoker competed with another
fellow in a tournament of song, each improvising his
own verses.
The evening passed. Before we were aware of it,
midnight had come. The train drew up at the station,
and a moment later we were pulling out of the little
town of Guadix—out of Andalusia.
