splittring av intresset, som en läsning i flera repriser måste
få till följd. »It appears evident», säger Poe, »that there
is a distinct limit, as regards length, to all works of literary
art — the limit of a single sitting»^ och i ett annat samman-
hang yttrar han om romanen: »As the novel cannot be read
at one sitting, it cannot avail itself of the immense benefit
of t o t a 1 i t y. Worldly interests, intervening during the
pauses of perusal, #iodify, counteract and annul the im-
pressions intended. But simple cessation in reading v^ould,
of itself, be sufficient to destroy the true unity. In the brief
tale, however, the author is enabled to carry out his full
design without interruption. During the hour of perusal,
the soul of the reader is at the vv^riter’s control.»

Kortheten får emellertid ej drivas in absurdum, ty »a
certain degree of duration is absolutely requisite for the
production of any effect at all» ^. Som ett fel mot denna
regel anför han Shelleys eljest beundransvärda Indian
Serenade och inskärper att inom lyriken »undue brevity
degenerates into mere epigrammatism. A v e r y short
poem, while now and then producing a brilliant or vivid,
never produces a profound or enduring effect. There must
be the steady pressing down of the stamp upon the wax.» "^
Dock är härutinnan överdriven längd att anse som »the
one unpardonable sin» ^. ,
Yrjö Hirn har framhållit, att Poe tillämpade samuia upp-
fattning som redan Hemsterhuis hyste, nämligen att män-
