31 Augusti kom gen. Sherman emellertid med den större delen
af sin här till Jonesborough och besegrade den derstädes för-
lagda af gen. Hardee anförda rebellkåren, hvilken i striden
förlorade 1,400 man. Gen. Hood var nu nödd och tvungen
att utrymma Atlanta den 2 September, hvarpå unionshären
inryckte i staden, hvilken gen. Sherman ämnade förvandla till
’cett nytt Gibraltar”, Han befalde derföre, redan den 4 Sep-
tember, stadens innevånare att aflytta och begifva sig till annan
ort. Före den 12 i samma månad nödgades 446 familjer ut-
görande 1,644 personer, af hvilka 800 voro harn och 79 tje-
nare, lemna staden och begifva sig söder ut, de feste i saknad
af nödiga lifsmedel 1). Unionshärens förluster under tåget
uppgingo till nära 30,000 man; rebellernas till 35- a 40,000:
8 Krigshändelser i Tennessee och Kentucky; slagen vid
Franklin och Nashville; Morgans härjningståg. Efter At-
lantas fall uppbröt gen. Hood med sin här, som efter erhållen
förstärkning, uppgick till omkr. 36,000 man, öfvergick Chatta-
hoocheefloden och tågade mot Ållatoona, som han häftigt an-

see starve. Now that war comes home to you, you feel very differently
— you deprecate its horrors, but did not feel them when you sent car
loads of soldiers and ammunition, and moulded shells ånd shot to carry
war into Kentucky and Tennessee, and desolate the homes of hundreds
and thousands of good people, who only asked to live in peace at their
old homes, and under the government of their inheritance. But these com-
parisons are idle. I want peace, and I believe it can only be reached
through Union and war, and I will ever conduct war purely with a view
to perfect and early success. But, my dear sirs when that peace does
come, you måy call upon me for any thing. Then will I share with you
the last eracker, and watch with you to shield your home and families
against danger from every quarter. Now you must go”.
