c) alla slags egennamn, föregångna af adjektiv,
t. ex. the great Newton. The mighty England.
Anm. 1. Namn på enstaka berg och uddar, i synnerhet då de
föregås af appellativ, stå vanligen utan artikel, t. ex. Hecla is the
principal volcano of Iceland. The top of Vesuvius. Mount Sinai. Cape
Palma (men: the Cape l. the Cape of Good Hope). Äfven utelämnas
artikeln ofta framför namn på sjöar, föregångna af lake, t. ex. Lake
Huron. Lake Superior.
Anm. 2. Undantagsvis hafva följande länders och städers namn
äfven i singularis best. art.

the Morea, the Ukraine,
the Tyrol, the Hague,
the Palatinate (Pfalz), the Havanna.
Anm. 3. Då adjektivet tillsammans med ett person- eller ortnamn
bildar en vanlig sammanställning, där adj. och subst. liksom
sammansmält till ett begrepp, begagnas ej artikel, t. ex. Merry
England. Fair France. The climate of ancient Germany. Old Nestor.
Young Rip van Winkle. Poor little Tommy. S:t Paul (däremot: the S:t
Gotthard, the S:t Bernhard). European Turkey. Southern Italy. -
Så äfven: All Germany. Half Sweden.
94. Särskildt märkes artikelns bruk vid vissa appellativ,
som begagnas såsom egennamn.
Med artikel stå sålunda namn på väderstreck och vindar:
The North, the South, the East, the West o. s. v., men:
from north to south. The rocky mountains are north (adverb)
from the Mississippi; namn på fartyg, offentliga byggnader,
tidningar och tidskrifter. T. ex. One of the vessels was
named the Pinta. We returned to the Lion (värdshuset Lejonet).
The Times (tidning). The Spectator (tidskrift).
The Vatican. The Parthenon. (Däremot: Greenwich Hospital,
Buckingham palace. Blackwood’s Magazine - då namnet är
lånadt från ett ställe eller en person.)
