Summary
of observations ön the breeding habits of the Honey-Buzzard:
Incubation about 31 days.
The tnale partakes in brooding the eggs and in protecting the
young against rain or cold weather.
The young need 35—40 days to be fledged.
The laying season varies from the beginning of June to the
beginning of July. Probably the old birds lay first, and those
laying the first time låter in the season.
It is no uncommon occurrence that nests are built and lined
with leafy twigs without any breeding taking place in them. The
green twigs are taken from linden, birch, ålder and aspen growing
near the nest.
The Honey-Buzzard feeds the young with hymenopterous larvae,
only exceptionally with other food.
The young of the Common Blizzard stay in the nest, as I
have with full certainty stated this summer, about 50 days. The
so much rasher development of the Honey-Buzzard is no doubt an
adaptation to its låte breeding, which in its tum stånds in
con-nection with its diet.
