6 Yrjö Ilvessalo, The Forest .’Resources’ of Finland in 1936—1938

growth of the forest resources of Finland during the 15 years that
elapsed between the two surveys. It was impossible, of course, to
take into consideration the changes in the forests that have occurred
owing to the war in some districts situated close to the eastern and
north-eastern frontiers, and so far, as they are confined to
comparatively small areas, they do not tend to exert any considerable
influence on the total results.

In publishing the main results of the national forest survey I wish
to record my gratitude to those foresters and assistants, more than
one hundred in number, who performed the heaviest part of the work,
the field work, almost all of whom are at present taking part in the
defence of the country and some of whom have already laid down
their lives for it. My thanks are also due to the assistants who have
helped me zealously in performing the arduous work of calculating
the results.

Helsinki, January 1940.

The author.
