growing stock refers to the northern part of the country and over 2/a
to the southern part.

The present results regarding the total growing stock are not
directly comparable with the figures obtained in 1922—23. The
principal reason is the same as the one referred to in regard to the volume
of deciduous trees. A slight reduction is also caused by the fact that
the poorest forest land is now classified as waste land, the growing
stock of which, representing a very low value, is not included in the
total volume. If all this is taken into consideration, the total growing
stock in 1922—23 would have been about 1 588 million m3, so that
the figure obtained at present is about 28 million m3 less. Of this
quantity about 20 million m3 can be ascribed to the reduction of
productive forest land (see page 12). Finally it should be mentioned
that the uncertainty of the figure obtained in 1922—23, 1 620 million
m3, if determined on the basis of the calculation of probability, may
amount to as much as 40—50 million m3. The final result of the
investigation may be said to be that the total volume or the total
growing stock of the forests of Finland has not increased between 1922—23
and 1936—38. On the contrary, owing to the slight reduction of the
forest area, it may have decreased slightly, but the decrease is so small
that it falls entirely within the limits of the uncertainty of the result
indicated by the calculation of probability.

In addition to the growing stock the forests contain dry, dead
trees that are still standing. The volume of these was measured on
every sample plot. Windfalls were examined in the same way.
On the other hand old lying trunks that had fallen and had generally
decayed, at any rate on the surface, were not taken into account.
In measuring dry trees and windfalls, trees with a breast-height
diameter of less than 5 cm were not taken into account, as they are
almost worthless.
