40 Yrjö Ilvessalo, The Forest .’Resources’ of Finland in 1936—1938

Table 24. Total annual growth of the growing stock.

has abated. In the southern half of Finland the growth of the forests
is appreciably greater in West Finland than in East Finland, although
the proportion of the forest area is reversed. The principal reason for
this is the better average condition of the forests in West Finland.

The figure for the growth of the Finnish forests is now 1.3 million
m3 higher than the result of the survey in 1922—23. These figures,
too, are not directly comparable. In view of the fact that the method
of calculation now employed gives a slightly higher growth percentage
than the method employed in the earlier survey (see page 36) and of
the factors referred to in connection with the volume of the growing
stock (see page 27), it may be concluded that, if the same bases and
the same methods had been employed, the growth would have been
almost exactly the same in 1922—23 as the result obtained on the
present occasion. The new figure for the growth is more accurate than
the former one. It should also be noted, however, that the growth of
the Finnish forests is now at least equal to their growth 15 years ago,
in spite of the forest area and particularly the area of productive
forest land having decreased during that time by about 200 000
hectares (see page 12). — It must, of course, also be borne in mind that
the result indicating the growth is subject to some uncertainty which,
if determined on the basis of the calculation of probability, may even
amount to slightly over 1 million m3.

The growth of the forests of West Finland and North Finland has
certainly increased to some extent, in the former undoubtedly owing
to the improvement of the condition of the forests and in the latter
owing to the reduction of abundant slowly growing old age-classes.
On closer examination it may be said that in West Finland the annual
growth has increased by fully 1 million m3, although the area of
productive forest land has been reduced by about 150 000 ha. The growth
of the forests in East Finland, on the contrary, has decreased by about
