BIER ARE grew a large and stately
linden tree of yore in the parish
of Stenbrohult in the southern

province of Smaland in Sweden.
It stood near the boundary of
two parishes, and towered like
a landmark in the surrounding woodlands, the
trees of which were comparatively dwarfed by its
imposing presence. This tree must have been
venerated by many, and loved by some, for several
lads from the parish when leaving home, and
starting upon their career in the schools, took

themselves surnames which they derived from their
