N 1736 Linnzus went to England,
the expenses of the journey
being defrayed by Clifford, as

one of the principal reasons for

going was to acquire from the
Apothecaries Garden, in Chelsea,
those plants which the gardens of Hartcamp did
not possess. Linnzus was furnished with a
letter of introduction to Sir Hans Sloane from
Boerhaave, but as it was couched in highly
eulogistic terms, it had a contrary effect to
that intended upon Sir Hans, so characteristic

of a true Englishman, and Linnzus was therefore
