110 The Floral King.

the House of Nobles, one of the leading spirits during
the short time Sweden was a Republic, and a great
patron of Science and Art. The noble Count inquired
of Linnzus if he had no supplication to make at the
Diet. ‘I feel convinced,’ said Tessin, ‘that the
Diet will think it a pleasure to favour a Swede who
has distinguished himself so much abroad.’ Linnzus
answered that he did not know of any solicitation
to make.

““* Consider it well, however, Doctor Linnzus,’
replied the Count, ‘think the matter over until to
morrow, and then come back to me again.’ Linnzus
met Triewald in the afternoon, and he advised him
to seek to become appointed lecturer in Mineralogy
in Stockholm, now vacant, with the remuneration of
100 ducats, and which place had formerly been filled
by Triewald. The following morning Linnzus
returned to the Count, who with a complacent smile
received his petition, and asked him to return to
dinner. Count Tessin then went to attend a
meeting at what was called the ‘ Secret Committee,’
and when he returned he met Linnzus with eyes
beaming with delight. ‘I congratulate you, doctor,’
