210 The Floral King.

it may still recover itself in time, alone the stem

“‘T hope that you, dear Madam, will read this as
kindly, as I hastily and honestly have written it.
‘*T remain with unalterable veneration,
‘“‘ My dearest and kindest Madam,

“‘Your most obedient servant,

“CARL LINNAUS.
“Upsala, 1758, the 16th October.

“‘ My wife begs me not to send this letter, for she
says she will then never get another letter from her
dear mother. But I cannot see how it is possible
that you, dear Madam, would take ill what is not
meant for offence.”

However his prudent wife persisted in her
opinion as to the dangerous tenour of the letter,
admonishing the old lady not to sell her property,
thereby to favour any one of her children in
particular, and it was never sent, but Linnzeus’ wife
kept it secure under lock and key in her own
drawers, hence years afterwards it was first brought

forward among other relics of Carl Linneus.
