Warren, F. M., History of the novel previous to the 17th century.
After a general chapter on the distinction between »story»,
»ro-mance» and »novel», the author discusses the Greek novel, the roman*
ces of chivalry, the Italian and Spanish pastorals, and the Spanish
picaresco novel, and gives long analyses of such works as the
»Ama-dis of Gaul», »Palmerin of England*, Montemayor’s »Diana», etc.

Book is largely devoted to a description of native manners and

English artist (1763—1804), master of genre and animal
paint-ing, much resembling the best of the Dutch masters. Some of the

and Stanhope Forbes. Excellent reproductions of Morland’s works.

Att dylika notiser äro av särdeles stor hjälp och stort intresse för
den litteratursökande allmänheten faller av sfg självt, men lika naturligt
är, att de innebära ökat arbete och ökad kostnad för biblioteket. Men,
som jag i en föregående uppsats redan nämnt, de amerikanska
biblioteken omhuldas på allt sätt av såväl enskilda som av stat och kommun,
som i dem se ett av de viktigaste medlen till landets välstånd och
förkovran. Därför kunna också biblioteken bliva i stånd att på alla sätt
och med alla medel utvidga och fullkomna sin gagnande verksamhet.
