But he also knew that none could surpass him in
splendor and majesty, as he stood there and bore
witness to his God.
While the fire of inspiration burned, he spoke;
but as it presently ebbed away, and the heavens
closed, and the nave of the church rose again from
the depths, he fell on his knees and wept, for he
knew that life held for him no higher moment, and
it was past.
After the morning service there was a vestry
meeting, presided over by the Bishop, who inquired what
cause of complaint the congregation had against
their pastor.
No longer angry and defiant, as he had been
before the sermon, the young man hung his head
in shame. Oh, the wretched stories that would now
be brought forward!
But no one spoke there was silence round the
big table in the vestry house.
He glanced round, first at the sexton—he was
silent; then at the vestry-men, the richer peasants,
the owners of the iron works—they were all silent.
They sat with firmly closed lips and looked down
at the table rather awkwardly.
“They are waiting for some one to speak first,”
he thought.
At last one of the vestry-men cleared his throat.
“I think I may say that, we have a very exceptional
pastor,” he said.
