walked up and down the lane for days waiting for
her. He will go mad with longing, but I dare n’t
say anything.”
“Marienne thinks he is angry with her.”
“Oh, no,she does n’t think that; she knows him,
but she is proud and will not take the first step.
They are proud and hard, both of them, and they
are in no trouble. It is I who must stand between
them.”
“Aunt knows that Marienne is going to marry me?”
