I cannot demand that any one should believe
these old stories. They may be nothing but lies and
fancies, but the fear which rolls over the human heart,
till it wails like the floor planks under Sintram’s
rocking-chair, the doubt which rings in your ears, as the
sleigh-bells rang in Anna Stjärnhök’s in the lonely
forest, are they only lies and fancies?
