No such joy, however, prevailed on the barges as
Countess Märta imagined. As long as the yellow
calash was visible, the frightened young woman had
crouched down upon the cargo without moving
or saying a word. She only stared at the shore.

It is probable that it was only when she saw the
yellow calash disappear in the distance that she
recognized the cavaliers. Again she sprang up, and it
seemed as if she wished to make another attempt
