“On credit, uncle!”

That was more than the big foundry proprietor
could withstand. “God bless you, boy,” he said;
“you truly need a wife who has some money. If
you can win Marienne, you can have her.”

In this way they came to an understanding before
Baron Adrian had dismounted. But Melchior Sinclaire
knew very well what he was doing, for Baron
Adrian was a good fellow.

A little later the lover had gone to Marienne and
rushed at once into the subject.
