He who listened to her experienced the same
misgiving he had felt that spring morning when he
rowed her ashore from the Ekeby barge and left her
to her fate. Now he must help her to ruin her future,

she has done an injury to the child in not being able
to give it a father’s care. She has an exceedingly
sensitive conscience, that little woman.”
“But I know I shall make her miserable,” cried
Gösta.
“That you must not do, Gösta. You must be a
sensible man now, with a wife and child to look
after.”
In the meantime the rector would drive down
to Svartsjö and arrange matters both with the
curate and the judge, and the end of it all was that
the banns were called on the following Sunday in
