FORORD.

Da det her omhandlede fund fremkom, havde jeg tid
været nødvendigt paa mange punkter at gjøre afstikkere.

PREFACE.

At the time when the discovery treated of in this
work occurred, I had, at intervals during a long period,
sought, to form an idea of our ancient shipping; and
the requisite preliminary researches were then very nearly
completed. Subsequently, that which still remained
incomplete has been carried out, and the collective results
of the investigation appear now, embodied in the Part II
of the present treatise. Thus placed, I hope, that this
will form, for the reader, no unwelcome addition;
inasmuch as that special branch of the active life of our
forefathers has not, hitherto, been the object of any amplified
and connected investigation, one that both extended its
range to the outer world, and to those customs which,
as a heritage from the past, exist in our country. To this
be it added, that our description of the discovered ship
will, as I hope, be found less intricate when reference
can be had directly to a general description, while
otherwise at many points digressions would have been
necessary. Nevertheless, and to preclude misconception, let
me here repeat, although such repetition may be
superfluous, that Part II of this work is without any reference
to the Gokstad ship, and does but present what might have
been known before that vessel was brought to light.

Another addition is due to the kindness of Doctor and
Professor of Medicine, Jac. Heiberg, who, in an Appendix
has described the disinterred human bones and from them
drawn conclusions touching the buried person’s age and
stature, as well as the disease from which he had suffered;
