bistand fik man ogsaa gravningen foreløbig indstillet.
omtalte rør tillagte størst betydning, men uden grund, da
jorden. Der var saaledes ikke fremkommet noget, hvoraf
kunde sluttes, at man her havde en gravhaug for sig.
Men da træstykkerne viste tydelige merker paa menne-
skelig bearbeidelse, fortjente haugen en nærmere under-
segelse.
udgift for haugens ejere under min ledning.

as Mr. F. Høst, -at Sandefjord, had — from interest in
the matter — informed us; and through his kind assistance
we also got the excavations stopped for a time. But as
the diggers couid no longer control their curiosity, they
again began their work, that had been suspended for a little
while. On the 6th of February I therefore went down
to the place to do what might be considered desirable.
It then appeared, that the digging had been executed in
such a manner, that from a point a little westward of
the middle of the mound, a small passage had been for-
med aslant down toward the bottom. While digging
thus they had found some thin tubular things of sandy
clay hard as stone, and further down also mixed with
blue clay, a great quantity of chips, and larger pieces
of wood, that had been cut, and of moss together with
fragments of hazel branches. On the other hand it must
on account of the vacillating explanation of the diggers,
be held very doubtful whether any coal had been
found. The tubes mentioned seemed to the diggers of
the greatest importance, but without any reason, for they
had clearly been formed by ants forming their passage
under the ground. Nothing had consequently appeared,
that might lead to the supposition, that we here had a
barrow before us. But as the pieces of wood evidently
showed marks of having been- worked by the hand of men,
the mound deserved more closely to be examined. After
some negotiations it was settled, that the digging should
be put off, until the frost had gone out of the ground
and then continued under my guidance without any ex-
pense to the owners, to which the other directors of the
society also agreed.

With this intention I again on the 27th of April
came to the place, and, when I had closely examined the
outside of the mound, we on the following day began the
digging, as I had previously settled how I would proceed.

The mound had through repeated ploughings both
round about it and upwards, been so much changed, that
it was impossible in any way to judge as to either its
original form or its exact size. Most likely it must have
been somewhat higher and round, but now it was some-
what oblong. When measured, its length from N. E. to
S. W. was found to be about 50 m., whilst from N. W.
to S. E. it was but 43 m. long. The height from the
field level to its top was supposed to be about 5 m. On the
eastern part of the mound there appeared in the middle,
from the basis to the top, a slight recess which according
to what was stated, had originated from an excavation
some fifty years ago, but which seemed to be much
older.

As to the plan I wished to follow under the exca-
