”Judge not that ye be not
judged...”
I know of no more beautiful words in the Bible.
If they could have been the guiding principle for
society, the world today would have been different.
If people took it into consideration more than they
have done, there would be far greater understanding
for those who have ended up in the shadows. We
become easily shocked over crime, sitting comfortably
at home reading the newspaper headlines and reports.
It is too easy for us to judge and condemn. We do
not realize that instead, we should try to take into
consideration the criminal’s environment, investigate
to what extent his deeds grew out of poverty or
were caused by crowded living conditions which
destroy all pleasure in the home; whether it is
connected with inherited tendencies or neglected
education, or with destitution in a wartorn country
where cold, hunger and a gnawing fear of the future
are daily guests. If we did this, we would
perhapscease to beat our breasts in righteous anger and
instead feel deeply grateful that we spent our
childhood and youth in a home full of virtue and
harmony. This ought to make it possible for us to
retain some of the love we have enjoyed and the
beauty we have shared. Perhaps it would even mean
