People in Bomb Shelters
A night in a bomb shelter, no. matter where, is the
same sad, dreary, and oppressive experience. The
drama is repeated everywhere. The air raid warnings
sound, the people rush to their shelters, mostly
women, children and old men, since the young are
in military service. They sit listening, silent and
tense. First they hear the increasing roar of
approaching planes. Then they hear the explosions of
the bombs and the crash of falling buildings. While
antiaircraft guns chatter, they speculate about where
the bombs have hit, nearby or in the distance? Then
they come up into the blacked out streets. Here and
there fires are burning. Search light beams still
sweep the night sky. Aid patrols are in action. Fire
brigades and ambulances rush by. Then the inevitable
question is asked, ”Is my home still standing? Or
have I become one of the hundreds of thousands of
people who have in this way lost all they possessed?
Will I become one of those who must wander about
in search of a new place to live?”
Thus it was in all countries involved in the war
of 1939 to 1945. It struck the civilian population as
severely as it did the military. Everywhere were the
same problems and the same suffering. Everywhere
people asked themselves the same question: ” Will the
bomb that falls tonight have my name on it?”
Everywhere life was filled with the knowledge that
