Prince Carl
The same day (November 1945) I left for
Germany, I was appointed Chairman of the Swedish
Red Cross. I accepted the appointment with the
greatest gratitude, but I felt a great deal of doubt
regarding my ability to carry out the task. To succeed ”The
Red Cross Prince”, was one matter, to replace him
was quite another. What he has meant to Swedish
humanitarian work, national as well as international,
perhaps will never be fully appreciated. In a few
words, I will describe his contributions, although I
realize that the story of the great work he has
accomplished would, in itself, require an entire book.
Just being the leader of the Swedish Red Cross for
more than forty years is an accomplishment worth
admiring. Prince Carl also achieved great results.
When he joined the Red Cross, the membership
numbered 4,500. When he left his post as leader, the
membership had increased to about 550,000. When he
took over the Chairmanship at forty-five, he
instituted countless reforms and new programs which he
continued until his retirement. With his great
organizational skill and foresight, he succeeded in bringing
about a steady and succesful growth, at the same
time bringing order to the organization.
Some years after Prince Carl became Chairman,
he left active military life, and after that he could
devote himself almost exclusively to his task of leading
