Austria and Hungary where there was a great lack
of food. Also, aid expeditions were sent to Poland and
Russia. He likewise took the initiative in connection
with the repatriation of prisoners of war.

During the years between the two World Wars,
developments in no way were suspended. In the
domestic field of the Swedish Red Cross Prince Carl
made many valuable contributions. In that way it
became a pioneer in the field of social hygiene. To
a certain extent these activities, begun by Prince
Carl and his assistants, have gradually been taken
over by the government. It was quite natural that
the membership of the organization steadily
increased, and that interest in its activities became more
and more widespread among the Swedish population.
It is certain that the social work started by Prince
Carl was the reason for this increased interest.

We also vividly remember the ambulance which
the supervisory board of the Swedish Red Cross sent
to Abyssinia in 1935, when that country was attacked
by Fascist Italy.

In spite of his advanced age at the beginning of
the Second World War, the Chairman of the Swedish
Red Cross started new relief work which proved that
he still possessed great initiative and a clear
understanding of the tasks at hand. The very morning the
Russians invaded Finland, he was ready to begin
relief action, which resulted in the sending of
several ambulances to our eastern neighbor. A proposal
from the Swedish Red Cross to send medical help to
the Russian front brought no results, as the Russian
authorities never replied. This work was executed
without in any way interfering with the clear duty
