From her, instructions go to all the other
institutions. For instance, take the Red Cross. According
to an order recently issued by the Communist party,
all the Romanian officers belonging to this
organization must immediately resign. Take also the
Swedish relief organizations. As you know, they have
occasionally employed, for example as provision
supervisors, Romanian officers who no longer are in
active service. These men have now received a
secret order to hand in their resignations.”
”The Communist party looks askance at all
foreign relief work. It has happened that the
organization Cars has put signs on trucks containing
American relief shipments stating that these goods
came from Sovjet Russia. Rumors are also spread
that among their big shipments of army canned
foods, Americans have smuggled weapons into
different parts of the country in order to encourage an
uprising.”
From another source, I heard the following: On
different occasions, it had been noticed that the
trains with which the Russians, according to an
existing agreement, were to transport oil from
Romania, in reality contained grain. If the Russians,
in violation of the agreement, had not made these
food shipments, the food problem in Romania
would have been much less disastrous for the
country.
The last day I was in Romania, April 80, I paid
a visit to Sinaia to the King and his mother, Queen
Heléna. I met two isolated people. King Michael
had hardly any more contact with his government,
