Ön this very rainy day, wliich precludes all external
observation, — being much against my will confined to my
cabin — I will try to find words in which to express my
thanks for your dear letter — and thoughts with which to answer
its contents.
It is a very high matter, the very riddle of human
existence, which, if I cannot unriddle in these few lines, 1
may stånd the möre excused as volumes would scarcely suffice
to do it in.
The doctrine of A t o n e m e n t seems to me, when taken
by itself and founded only ön solitary fact, absolutely
incompre-hensible. In scrutinizing this mystery one must take a far
wider range, comprehensive of the human s p e c i e s as
a whole. For nothing is möre certain than that a 11 souls,
individual though they are and through their own exertions
ever möre individualizing themselves, are nevertheless, a u
f o n d, one soul. It is therefore that they are all permeable
to one another, transparent to one another, particularly in the
higher regions of sensation, thought and action, where all is,
strictly speaking, common property, so that every light here
illumines the whole intellectual world, the möre so the higher
•and purer its spiritual atmosphere is. — This great
common-wealth of souls, this intellectual community, is the only point
of view from which the doctrine of Atonement becomes,
