toward the door. "I thought that somebody was lîstening out-
side." ttardly had she uttered these words, whcn they heard
a loud noise, which neared them more and more–state-room
doors were suddenly opened, and then flapped back again, and
on thc quarter-deck if became more lively. Every thing signi-
fied that the passengers had arrîved, and that the #’lwr was
about continuing ils voyage.
":Keep quiet down here !" said the lieutenant-colonel, arising.
"I shall v¢alk up-stairs, and see what kind of folks there are
above, and #vhether I can find society fit for us among them.
I)o hOt make your toflet until I bring you news."
The lieutenant-colonel wa]ked off, carefully locking the door
behind him. With the exclamation, "¥es, yes; all right!"
Amelia placed ber bat on ber trunk, laid ber fingers over ber
lîps, nodded to ber mother, and suddenly moved the table, laying
papa’s things one side, so as to make room for ber mirror.
"Itow warm i# is in here, dcar mother !–my curls are entire!y
loosencd # I must do them up a little. #rhoever thcre may be
up there, I must, af any-rate, look a little Christian-like."
"Yes, arrange yom- locks, dear child, l#apa does not call that
mak]ng toi]et."
":But dear mamma, I must also put on a new cape–the ont
I bave on is hOt clean."
"Watt untfl to-morrow; for you will be obliged to open the
chest, #vhich will cause everything fo appear in confusion when
papa returns."
"¥es, yes, I will bave fo wait until to-morrow; but t£en I
will dress most magnificently. I sh#ll put on the new vefl, and
bang over my shoulders thc green mantilla. Lord, how kind if
was of papa, that he took a state-room in the saloon. I could
almost bave cried out with joy when he said so."
"Dear Amelia, you wcre before afraid that son#e one on the
outsidc would hear what l#apa said," interrupted ber mother,
