THE CONFESSIONAL CHAIR AT THE CLOISTER OF WRETA.

" .t#LRE We hot going up soon, papa #" inquîred Amelia, who
was looking, with long-ring eyes, through the window af the shore,
as if glided past.

"I think if is rime now," said her father, who had taken a
little nap. After he had yawned, and s#retched himself several
rimes, and Amelia had brushed his coa#, he ascended the s#air-
way #o resume his examination of the passengers on the deck.
Af#er the lapse of a few moments, he announeed fo the laclies
tha# they should eome up.

"Well, God be praised, I am finally released from #his irksome
eonfinemen#," exclaimed Amelia, gaily, and arranged, as well as
she was able, ber shawl before the small mirror; then put#ing ort
ber bonnet, #hrew over if her new veil, which she had taken from
ber trtmk during ber father’s nap, and wi#h ber parasol in one
hand, and a book in the o#her (for ber father had expressly
recommended ber doîng do), she mincingly ascended the stairway
after her mother, where they were reeeived by the lieutenant-
colonel with #he gallantry of a polite man of #he world, who
condueted them fo the after part of the deck, where two ladies
from the capital were seated.

After the chevalier had enter#ained the ladies for a shor# #ime
by naming the places which they were passing, he walked fo the
other side of the deek, for #he purpose of entering into conversa-
tion with a "gentleman, whose naine had par#icularly a#traeted his
attention when he had looked over the list of passengers, ttis
endeavours were eomple#ely sueeessful, #he four genflemen, who
had passed the middle age, met the lieutenant-colonel wi#h the
