While the hay is consumed directly by the domestic animals and is thus of
economical use, the Zostera in the sea must generally first rot, then be consumed
by the lower animals which are again eaten by the fishes, before it can be of any
use to man. It would therefore be advisable to lay more stress than has hitherto
been done on the cultivation of the few lower animals which in themselves are
useful animals, such as prawns and edible mussels, or directly make use of some
of the over-production of Zostera e. g. for industrial purposes; what has been done
in this respect up to the present time is but little, as for example stuffing of
mattresses, manure etc.
