every house is placed a red barrel; very smart it looks
too. Viborg has a wholesome terror of fire; and these
little casks are kept ready filled in case of being wanted
—name of the owner painted upon them to avoid
confusion ; rather an antediluvian idea, but better than no
protection at all. We step into the South parish church
to admire its ancient altarpiece. It came first from
Antwerp, and once adorned the far-famed church .of
Esrom Cloister; then, after the fire, which lapped up
the churches and houses of the city of Viborg as a cat
does cream, it was sent to replace the one destroyed.
It is a wonderful production.
We crossed the lake to Asmild Kloster, founded in
the twelfth century by old Bishop Gunner, who died
here in the ninety-ninth year of his age. A very small
portrait of Hans Tausen hangs in the whitewashed
nave, whose aisles have long since disappeared.
HALD.
9th July.—A drive of an hour, partly by heath,
partly by forest, brings us to Hald. We alighted
at a manor-house of no pretensions, built by
Guldborg (enemy of Caroline Matilda, and last
representative of the Høg family). A more lovely spot
than Hald cannot well be imagined — her purple
waters, and the opposite banks o’erhung with
luxuriant beeches; the foundations of her ancient castle
rising abruptly on the little island, now hardly
disconnected from the mainland, for the waters of the lake
are low. It was from the castle of Hald that, in early
times, when a dreadful famine oppressed the land, and
corn was scarce, Aage and Ebbe, sons of King Snie,
first of the Longobardi, whose høi you may see in Østi
