the lady Karen.* She died on her return to Rome, in
1373, and was canonized by Urban VI. some years
later, when her bones were brought over to Vadstena
with great rejoicings. The revelations of St. Bridget
in former days held a high reputation in the Church of
Rome, particularly those regarding the seven future
hingst of Denmark and Sweden, the seventh of whom
is supposed to allude to Christian ILj

At the Reformation the nuns of Maribo, though let
down easily, conducted themselves so badly that Bishop
Jespersen, Confessor Regius, went down expressly to
investigate the matter.

They were accused of letting into their house drunken
tradesmen as well as noblemen, of tearing each other’s
caps and fighting; not contenting themselves with
swearing by ten thousand, they swore by ten thousand
dozen devils, using awful bad language ; they beat each
other, drank spirits, and got so intoxicated they could
not stand on their legs; held to the Catholic belief, had
“ wicked books ”—i. e. Papistic—and prayed to all the
saints in the calendar. The bishop, in despair, issued
new regulations, but to no effect; the nuns continued
just as bad as ever. Fresh rules, in 1596, were put in

I He shall stir up the whole world anti the sea, and make sorrowful
the simple. It is he shall draw the blood of the innocent, but he shall
leave the country, and that shall happen as is said, that he shall sow
pleasure and reap sorrow and affliction. Fools shall reign and old and
wise shall not bo brought forward. Honour and right shall be laid
aside until he comes who shall appease my anger, and he shall not
save his soul from what is right.
