of Sweden. ”The Golden Hall” and the Chapel Royal date from his
treign. The charming well, too, and the ornamental gateways were
built during his days. Kalmar Castle, as it stands at the present
time, is a result, föremost, of king Johms interest in architecture,
and it stands alone among the renaissance buildings of the
kingdom. A»sstethically it has no superiors and scarcely any placee
in Sweden has been so entwined by so many continuous threads
with the history of the nation. — The castle now contains an
interesting museum, with archeological and ethnographical collec-
tions.

STATRCASE. Medieval tombstones were made into steps. Al
the top of the stairs there is to the left an ornamental wooden
portal. E
"THE QUEENS HALL”, a room with mural paintings and a
charming chimney, dating from the days of John III. Pictures,
representing the regents of the Vasa family.
RUTSALEN ("THE PARQUETRY HALL”). Panelling from the
times of John III, most richly inlaid.
"THE GREY HALL”. Mural paintings from 1586, representing
the history of Samson and painted by Arendt Lamprechts van
Emden. The bedstead has been called ”The Bed of Gustavus
Adolphus”. It is, however, a Danish work dating from the middlo
of the 17th century.
”KING ERICS CHAMBER”. A charming room, famous for its
panellings which are most richly inlaid. The room dates from 1562.
It is considered to be the finest renaissance woodwork in Scan-
dinavia.
"THE GOLDEN HALL”. The ceiling was richly ornamented in:
1576, by a foreign artist, Mikael van Berini by name. This elaborate
work has no equal in the north of Europe. The chimney, too, dates
from the days of king John.

"THE ROYAL STAIRCASE”. ”THE WELL TOWER". By going
downstairs you will find a gothic room, with a well in the
