George Washington, whose name he gave one
of his sons. He expressed his Hberal ideas
in the then radical Aftonposten, to which he was
an occasional contributor, in the latter part of
the year 1840. During his years of civil
service in Stockholm, he enjoyed the society of
men of letters, and his taste for art and litera-
ture became further developed. In 1848 he
bought Sundsholm, and later enlarged this
country-estate by considerable purchases of
adjoining land. In the many communal
tasks entrusted to him he found a suitable
field of activity for his energy. The confi-
dence he thereby inspired showed itself when
he, at the time of the adoption of the new
constitution, obtained a seat in the Second
Chamber, as representative for Tjust County,
a place which he kept until the Riksdag of
1883. He had for some time thought that a
new Agrarian party was necessary for the
solution of the important problems of land-
taxation, measures of defence, etc. At the
first Riksdag of the new Government, this
party was formed by Emil Key, Arvid Posse,
a few other noblemen, and several promi-
nent farmers. Through Key's influence the
party was led to take up wider social ques-
tions. He was a good speaker and a truly
