CHAPTER IV REMOVAL OF THE FAMILY TO STOCKHOLM 'T'HE path of Ellen Key's life goes straight -• and true toward the goal which she had unconsciousl}^ chosen for herself as a child. The road leading to development of individual- ity has been her highway. Effort and labour it has cost, but she reached the goal. Curious- ly enough, we find that, at the ages of twenty, thirty, forty, and fifty, there were certain circumstances in Ellen's life which greatly helped to determine her development. Thus when she reached her twentieth year she moved with her parents to Stockholm for the winters because of the father's participation in the Riksdag. A rich field was thus opened for the girl thirsting for knowledge. She studied dili- gently at the library, and attended lectures, of which those by Professor Dietrichson at the Academy of Art especially interested her. In a gathering of women she heard Pontus 50
