In 1884, August Strindberg had been in- dicted for offending against the same law. But when the jury acquitted him it was thought that the antiquated statute could not be applied in our day. But in the year 1889, it was not enough that those indicted were found guilty by the jury but, what was worse, many, of whom one had the right to expect more enlightened views, approved the verdict. Here and there a voice uttered feeble protests, through the medium of the daily press, express- ing amazement and indignation, but on the whole the silence which reigned was as great outside as inside the prison walls.
