SUPPLEMENT EIGHT years have passed since my bio- graphy of Ellen Key first appeared. Now that this revised edition is to be published in an English translation, there is so much more to be said that I feel the necessity of adding a supplement. The name of Ellen Key has increasingly won a recognised and elevated place among con- temporary thinkers. In all Europe, and gradu- ally in America, she has come to be of great importance for the highest development of humanity. In her own country appreciation has been slow. "With the strength and swiftness of a storm-wind, her reputation spread over Eu- rope," as some one has said, but in Sweden we could not, would not understand. One of our most prominent critics' gives so good an explanation of this that I wish to quote him: "Sweden is not yet ripe for an authorship of her kind. As a general thing we avoid ' The young philosopher, Dr. John Landquist.
