Man studere då först Mills A system of logic, Book 2, Chapt. 5—-7.
Där finner nian, att meningsutbytet mellan Mill och Spencer egentligen
utgjorde sista akten i en vetenskaplig strid, hvilken hade sin anledning och
utgångspunkt i den skotska filosofen Dugald Stewart’s åsigt att
geometriens grundläggande satser äro af empirisk och hypotetisk natur. Denna
lara angreps af den af Kant påverkade "William Whewell, men försvarades
af Sir John Herschel. Först diskuterade nu de båda sistnämnda det
angifna spörsmålet. Därefter stod debatten mellan Whewell och Mill, sedan
den senare i sin år 1843 första gången utgifna Logik sökt att i likhet
med Dugald Stewart häfda geometriens och matematikens i det hela rent
empiriska grundläggning.1 Slutligen öfvergick striden till en kontrovers
mellan Mill och Spencer, hvarvid den emellertid fick en mera all-män
innebörd, enär den kom att gälla frågan om criterium veri öfverhufvud.
Redan mot "VVhewell hade Mill framhållit2 att han icke ansåg
otänkbarheten (»the unconceivableness») vara något afgörande intyg på ett
omdömes objektiva ogiltighet och att å andra sidan nödvändigheten icke
utgjorde det högsta kriteriet. Det i sista instansen afgörande är fastmer
enligt Mill »the evidence of experience and observation».3
Erfarenheten bildar äfven enligt honom den sannskyldiga grunden till såväl den
förmenta otänkbarheten som den nödvändighet, hvilken dock faktiskt
tillkommer vissa satser. Ty dels gäller: »there is no möre generally
acknow-ledged fact in human nature than the extreme ditficulty at first felt in
conceiving anything as possible, which is in contradiction to
long-estab-lished and familiar experience, or even to old familiar habits of thought.
And this is a necessary result of the fundamental laws of the human mind.
When we have often seen and thought of two things together, and liave
never in any one instance either seen or thought of them separately, there
is by the primary law of association an increasing difficulty, which may
in the end become insuperable, of conceiving the two things apart».4 Och
vidare: nödvändigheten är enligt Mill i grunden ingenting annat än en
associativ nödvändighet: »nothing möre is requisite than a moderate
fami-liarity witli the general laws of association to dispel the illusion, which
ascribes a peculiar necessity to our earliest inductions from experience and
measures the possibility of things in themselves by the human capacity of
conceiving tliem».5
Spencer opponerar sig nu mot Mills låga uppfattning af »the test of
inconceivableness» och tillmäter nödvändigheten en vida högre dignitet
som sanningskriterium. Ja, Spencer ser i dessa tvänne extrema data
»the ultimate test of all beleifs». »The unconceivableness of its
negation is that which shows a Cognition to possess the highest rank —
is the criterion, by which its unsurpassable validity is known».6 Och i
konsekvens härmed: »the discovery that the predicate invariably exists
along with its subject is the discovery that this Cognition is one we are
compelled to accept; it is a necessary relation in consciousness; and to
