St. Thomas the Apostle and India.
By
Prof. Jarl Charpentier, Uppsala.
Literature on the mission of St. Thomas the Apostle in
India and on the Christians of St. Thomas, especially that of
an earlier period, cannot be quoted in full here. There are
several chapters on these subjects in the works of the
Portuguese 16th century historians such as De Barros, do couto,
Correa, Castanheda etc.; and heaps of information are
scattered through the works of Assemanni, La Croze and others.
But quite apart from these authors we shall here quote some
works of more recent origin, and especially those which are
perhaps less easily available to the student of theology than to
the scholar concerned with things Indian.
The work by Germann Die Kirche der Thomaschristen
(Gütersloh 1877) is well-known. It is a comprehensive work
but its author was weak in his criticism and not always
well-informed in general matters concerning Indian history and
religions. It should be compared with the review by burgess in
the Indian Antiquary IX, 312 sq. Other works on a
comprehensive scale and of a somewhat older date are Hough The
History of Christianity in India. i (London 1839) and ittüp
History of the Syrian Church of Malabar (Kottayam, ist ed.,
1869; 2nd ed., 1906) which is written in Malayälam and fairly
unavailable in Europe. Two articles written nearly a century
ago and apparently quite forgotten but still useful are those
by swanston in the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society 1834,
171 sqq. and 1835, 234 sqq.
