JARL CHARPENTIER
ran and published by the Pontificale Istituto di Studi Orientali
(1926) and also in Orientalia Christiana VI, 93 sq. (1926).
Some young Christians of St. Thomas in possession of
modern college training have lately taken a vivid part in the
discussion concerning the Apostle’s visit to India. The
protagonist of St. Thomas’ mission in Malabar is Mr. P. j. Thoma,
a personal acquaintance of the present writer. Articles by him
have appeared e.g. in the Indian Historical Records Commission
V (1924), 121 sq. and in the Centenary Supplement of the
Royal Asiatic Society p. 213 sq. where he pleads his case with
ability and skill but without sufficient method in judging of the
historical value of his sources. His views are opposed by Mr.
T. K. joseph by whom some quite useful articles have been
published in the Indian Antiquary LII, 157 sq., 355 sq. LIII,
93 sq., 123 sq. and especially in LV, 221 sq. Mr. joseph
according to my opinion quite correctly contends that St. Thomas
probably never came to South India but his reasons are not
always very valid. At the present moment a spirited discussion
is carried on between these two gentlemen in the ’Young Men
of India’. As far as I have been able to find out Mr. joseph’s
articles have appeared in the issues of July and December 1927,
those by Mr. Thoma again in those of November 1927 and of
January 1928. The later ones are known to me by the
courtesy of their author; but they cannot in fairness be said to carry
much conviction.
Mention should also be made of an article by DANIEL
Indian Antiquary LIII, 257 sq. as well as of the two
comprehensive ones by Dr. J. N. Farquhar in the Bulletin of the John
Rylands Library X (1926), 80—in and XI (1927), 20—-50. Dr.
farquhar is a scholar of wide reading and well acquainted
with India from his missionary work. It is a pity that his
papers which make easy and agreeable reading should be not
so much scientific treatises as a sort of romantic reconstructions
of the presupposed life-story of the Apostle. Notwithstanding
this, there are in both of them many good and convincing
suggestions.
This short enumeration should be sufficient to anyone who
wishes to go somewhat further into this knotty and fascinating
