ST. THOMAS THE APOSTI.E AND INDIA
2 5
kingdom of Gondopharnes, an Indo-Parthian ruler of the Punjaub
and the Kabul valley during the first half of the earliest century
of our era. In those distant parts did he at one time preach
the faith of Christ and tell the tale of the Crucifixion and
Resurrection; there pèrhaps did he also seal with his blood the
faith of Jesus whom tradition tells us was not only his Master
but also his twin brother.
But so far these are mere suggestions. We have allowed
us mildly to criticize the reconstructions of Dr FarqUHAR, and
we shall not try to repeat them here.1
1 Those of my fellow scholars who may possibly read the above pages
are reminded that they have been written chiefly for the use of theological
students who may not always be perfectly at home in things concerned
with India. This accounts for what might otherwise be deemed a certain
prolixity in various passages of my paper.
