7. Till P. Wieselgren.2
Stockholm, January 24th 1837.
Sir,
Mr. Sam. Owen, (who I rejoice to say is still the life of the
Temperance cause in Sweden) has put into my hands your letter to
him of the 3d with its accompanying most encouraging document;
requesting me to communicate the following information:
1:0 The »Kungsholms Nykterhetsförening» — no longer exists,
i.e. the name was upwards of two years ago changed to
»Stockholms — —»; in so far therefore as the name of the Society has
been changed, the rules sent must at all events undergo verbal
revision.

say, only in name. I could, were it necessary, show that its want
of success must be traced to internal and not external causes. You
know how necessary a decided, straightforward President and a zealous,
orderly and intelligent Secretary are to the success of any
association. »A word to the wise is enough.» But
3:0 The Temperance cause has not lost its warm adherents in
Stockholm as witness the well edited »Fosterlandswännen». I have
since the most useful visit of Mr. Baird from Philadelphia had
several conversations with H.R.H. the Crown Prince on the subject
and a new and I really hope most active Committee are about to
take the lead of a Society differing in name but the same in
principle as the »Kungsholms NykterhetsFörening». This new Society
would have been established ere this, had not the illness of Count
F.B.E. Sparre, who is to be the President, prevented. Very soon
you may expect to hear of the formation of this Society, and Count
Sparre, who sends his kind regards, is disposed to recommend that
