Respected and dear friend,
May the richest blessings of »the upper and nether springs»
be vouchsafed unto you in abundance this year. May that Lord
»whose you are and whom you serve» grant you a continuance of
health, and holy spiritual influence, that you may [be] increasingly
happy in your own soul, and increasingly useful in the Church of
God. So prays a sincere though unworthy fellowlabourer in the
vineyard of the Lord.
I need not say what pleasure your letter received Nov. 30.
1838 afforded me; the kindness therein expressed, connected as it
is with a knowledge of my multifarious engagements will readily
forgive my delay in replying.
The fact is, as you had kindly expressed a favourable opinion
of my Sisters poetic vein, I wished to copy out her thoughts on
viewing the falls of Trollhättan last September, as a little
reminiscence of the simple-hearted missionary girl, but never could
command time till yesterday. I now send them, and have no doubt the
perusal will please you, as regards the spirit displayed, if not in
literary worth.
The Missions-Tidning for January will give you some account
of great preparations among the Methodists for the celebration this
year of the Centenary of Methodism; among the various meetings
which have been held in divers places, that in London appears to
have been specially interesting. I enclose a paper containing the
report of that meeting, which can be returned at your convenience.
The Centenary fund according to the last accounts exceeds already
£ 90,000 and little doubt is entertained of raising £ 150,000 among
these often despired methodists.
The same Missions-Tidning contains another piece of
information which is not so pleasing, viz. that Blixén has ceased to be
Editor. This would have taken place at all events next April, but its
occurrence now is very unpleasant. I give you in full confidence
the particulars, as we shall probably beseech you for help in our
difficulties. About a month ago B. came to me to get some parti-
