22. Till G. Stephens1
Stockholm, Feb. 6. 1839.
Mr. G. Stephens,
On receiving yours of the 4th I at first resolved to let it remain
unanswered, but on more mature deliberation I find duty must make
feeling give way.
I do then most sincerely and most unaffectedly record my regret,
if in my conversation with you at Mr. Hjertas, any expressions were
used needlessly irritating, or inconsistent with that charity which
hopeth all things. My deeply wounded feelings must plead some
excuse. When on Thursday evening I saw the painful attack, I said
instantly to Mrs. S.: »Could I conceive it possible that Mr. Stephens
would drag me thus before the public of Sweden, I would say,
judging from some expressions in this article, that he is the Author»

proper parties concerned, would you interfere to provent this money
being lent on a Chapel here, which you know cannot be made the
property of the Conference in the sense in which English Chapels
are considered to be so? — You know, for that too was stated fully
to you, that the Conference authorities can not hold property here,
and that the only security for the proper appropriation of the
considerable sum contributed by English Methodists, which can be
obtained is a mortgage on the property which is of no value till all
other claims are discharged. A remark in Mr. Hjertas note, which
he must have been instructed to make, shews that the explanations
