MEDDELANDEN OCH AKTSTYCKEN

themselves now Alt Lutheraner and who are so conceited that they
do not allow salvation to any one not belonging to their flock.
They are a stiffnecked people, who strive after rule to be able to
excommunicate all that do not think like them. These principles
are spreading very much here in Finland and I regret to say that
most of the young ministers in the låte revivals are tinged with it.
They have such separatistical views that I cannot feel unity with
them. A dislike against the temperance cause and prayer meetings
is quite a distinguishing feature with them. Reading (Luthers works
in particular) and singing psalms they approve of, but woe to him
who would propose to pray publicly, they would call him
immediately a Pharisee, an hypocrite and withdraw from him. Such has
been my experience and I doubt whether they believe me a
follower of Christ since of låte they quite shun me. Miss Hydén has
not fared better, and she has quite given up reasoning with them.
Our Minister is a Magister Grönberg who a year ago become
serious and is now preaching the gospel with great zeal of which
many fruits are apparent. Yet he holds the same sentiments,
and if you should hear him express himself about people (of the
laity) praying and temperance societies you would really be
astonished. Oh! my dear friend, how prone are people to overlook
the true principles of Christianity and to hold fast to particulars or
externals! —

I regretted very much not to find you at Stockholm when I
passed thro’ that city last summer. I fully intended on my way
home to come to Stockholm, but it became too låte in the season
and I came over land by way of Petersbg. At Berlin I spent very
pleasantly my time with Gossner, who charged me to remember
him to you. He sent you a sheet of his »Biene» with a few words
written on it, in expectation I was going to see you. It was with
great interest he heard of your exertions in Sweden. —

I would fain invite you to come over on a visit to
Finland some time, but I cannot promise you much success. The
high Clergy are prejudiced against you, and the serious young
ministers will not hear any thing about temperance etc. What
good could you effect? However if agreeable, I can assure you,
Miss Hydén, myself and a few more friends would be very happy
to see you at Tammerfors. Therefore let me invite you to us if
agreeable.

Last week I received a letter from Mrs Eide expressing her
anxiety at not having heard for 3 months from Miss Hydén and her
daughter Betty Mahnke. Please to tell her that Miss Hydén has
placed her daughter Betty at Kuopio farther into the interior with
a friend to learn housekeeping I believe. But no doubt letters will
have now arrived that were sent to Mrs Eide. All are well and
