This was the more unavoidable as a person residing in the
house, Mr. Malmqvist (clerk of the Chapel Royal (klockare vid
Hof-Förs.)) on applying at the District Police office for aid found as he
declares: »three men, two of whom expressed their willingness to
accompany me, while the third began making objections on the
ground of the reports he had heard regarding Mr. Scott’s sermons
etc., and because it was a thing unheard of that watchmen should
be required for a Church or a Priest’s house. When I stated that
I came on the authority of the Deputy Governor who had desired
me to request aid from this office when needed, he demanded my
name and address, which he wrote down. On leaving the office
with the two first named I met a third just entering the door who
also accompanied me.» This statement Malmqvist is ready to
confirm on oath if necessary but, is not anxious to appear against the
man, although having his own family in the house attacked, he felt
as a husband and father on the occasion.
Soon after Eight the mob had dispersed and all has since
remained quiet, what may transpire during the holidays especially
Easter Monday remains to be seen.

Högtärade Broder! Nåd och Frid af Gudi våran Fader och

Nu är det väl ändteligen tid, att jag gör slut på den långa
tystnaden, som varit hittils rådande. Då jag Juhltiden fick höra, att
Bror kommit från Amerika, var jag sinnad, att skrifva, men jag ville
uppskjuta tills jag hann få min redovisning färdig åt Herr Grossh. o.

Underbara äro Guds vägar. Det nyligen tilländalupna
tidehvarf, jag menar de sist framfarna månaderna, hafva för mig varit
ganska betydelsefulla. Djefvulen, hvars herravälde grönskar och
blomstrar i denna onda verlden, har nu drifvit förföljelsen såvida i
1 L. H. Laurin, f. i Pyhäjoki 1812, d. 1867. Blev prästvigd 1835, verkade
som hjälppräst i Kalajoki 1836—37, i Öfvertorneå 1838—41 och blev slutligen
prost i början av 1867. Under sin Kalajoki-tid anslöt han sig till pietiströrelsen
och dömdes jämte andra till 12 års suspension år 1842 på grund av olovliga
