HANDLINGAR TILL GEORGE SCOTTS VERKSAMHET I SVERIGE I 6 7
was to break oft" the service, and a large party having got into the
gallery commenced stamping with their feet on the wooden steps,
at the same time emitting such hideous sounds that it was
impossible to proceed, and the preacher therefore broke off, publicly
expressing his regret that a quiet religious exercise was in the Capital
of a protestant country disturbed by a riot in March 1842. The
calmness granted the Missionary on this occasion, was a proof that
God was with him. For nearly two hours the streets surrounding
the Chapel were crowded by idlers, but no further violence was
offered; in fact the rioters marched off in three companies singing
joyously after they had effected their purpose. There cannot be a

place, and that they may not, during the approaching important
festival be exposed to a repetition of such lawless proceedings, to
suspend the Swedish services in the said Church till efter Easter.

Governor, who thanked him for suspending the services, and on his
noticing that a crowd might be expected that evening as the
advertisement could not appear before tomorrow, ample succour was
