WESTIN, BREV FRÅN JOHN DURIE 2 IQ
To [Samuel Har t lib].1
(Uppsala, 15 Sept. 1636.)
Vpsal, 15. September [1636].
The last w:ch I wrote to you was 14 dayes agoe, before I
went from Stockholme to come hither; now I haue rec[eiue]d here
your last of ye 28 July. I can but thanke you for your care &
loue & shall contynue in prayers for your preseruation.
I am here in very great hopes to doe much good by gods
grace. For I haue not onely gotten all y:t I could desire and
expect from ye Theologicall facultie of this vniuersitie, but a great
deale more, then at this first meetinge I could haue hoped for;
they haue fully obliged themselues to ioyne with mee & to be
constant in p[ro]secutinge the worke, & to consult & act y:t shall bee
found fittinge to bee done; they haue giuen mee an answere vpon
the write, w:ch I gaue them to this effect, & it is a uery substantiall
one. Now I cannot send it to you, but afterward you shall haue
it godwillinge; y:t w:ch maketh mee conceiue so well of these men
is not onely their fauourable & affectionate exp[re]ssions w:ch they
haue in priuate vttered of ye worke, but ye good disposition w:ch
I find in their mynd, w:ch is well principled towards the busines.
I am now goeing towards Westrose from hence, where a
B[isho]p of cheif authoritie doth reside; if hee be as well disposed,
as these professors I make no doubt of setting this church a worke
to sollicite ye matter towards other Lutherans. Now if our men
there where you are will be reall, p[er]haps ye occasion wilbe offred,
wherein all their counsells may be made vse of. I pray you stirre
them vp & you may assure them y:t here is reall hopes & [-endea-uo[ur]s-] {+endea-
uo[ur]s+} to be expected. For one of ye professors of ye facultie
will goe from hence to ye Court of Stockholme to consult about ye
p[ro]moting of ye matter further, & least they should want occasion
of feeding those thoughts I haue conceiued a consultacon wherein
I propose 17. questions, by w:ch I submit vnto their Judgem[en]t
ye determinacon of points fundamentall in religion. For I & they
agree in this that to compose the differences a fundamentall
confession of fayth must bee erected. Those things in due tyrne shall
be sent you. In the meane tyrne I thought good to make you
p[ar]takers of my ioy that you may labour in prayers with mee
towards god to confirme those men in this good inclynation, and by
their meanes bringe the matter to a publique agitation. The Grace
of god p[re]serue you and support you and make you more and
more fit for his service. I pray let our freinds know these
gener-alls, & when I have ended this progresse, I will give you an
account of all.
