clynations are very variable & change vpon worldly respects & 1
doubt of the sinceritye of some of the diuines or att least of their
constancye that perhaps they will not persevere in the good
resolutions wxh they haue declared, but by the bishop of Westerose many
bee drawne from there good purposes. M:r Mathi a fewe dayes
agoe regretting the vnreasonablenes of some proceedings was saying:
that seeing they pretend agaynst mee nothi[ng] coullerablye but the
want of a comission, that if that pretext were taken away by a
letter to the Queene from our King that then they would bee forced
to enter into a nearer intreatie: but I am loath to take that course
of treating, for except they become tru[ly] willing to doe in the
feare of god their dutie of them selues: I thinke it best to leaue
them to themselues & to god: who in due tyrne will p[er]haps teach
them to bee more peaceable then now they are.

But I haue hope if the Lords Regents of this state will
interpose their authoritie in the worke in due tyrne, & represse the
vn-reasonable proceedings of some that seeke rather strife then agrement:
You need not to speake to Sr. Tho[mas]: any thing of these my
feares as yet: tyrne will-discouer the further euent of all things, but
if hee should bee inclyned to procure any Creditiue unto mee: you
may intimate that I haue signified unto you that I am not very
desireous of it, lest I might fall vpon some vnreasonable men, &
soe being vnder a respect of state it might Change the nature of
my worke and breed outward miscontentments & bee counted a
despe[ct] to such as might seeme to bee slighted in the cause: and
I would bee loath to haue anybodyes Creditt prostituted further then
myne: for as for mee there is no danger w[haltsoeuer men say or
thinke of mee, 1 will giue my selfe as last in that respect, hoping
to bee happie in goeinge through euill & good reports: for that is
the lotte of gods Children in this world.

[John Durie].

To William Laud.1
(Stockholm, 29 July 1637).

Most Reuerend Father in God,

The issue of this long expected meeting doth now giue me
some matter to write: for my businesse (after they hadde made an
ende of other matters) was recommended by a peculiar charge from
the L:ds Regents; to bee taken into consideration. So beeing called
to their meeting a whole day was spent in conference with me;
wherin I yeelded my self; as it were to bee examined by them (for
so they desired I should doe) to giue them in all thinges the better
satisfaction in such doubts as they might haue concerning the worke

1 In the Durie Collection, House of Lords.
